The most common reason your Rivian may not work is a software update or bug, especially after recent app updates. To resolve Rivian app issues, ensure a stable Internet connection, clear app data, and try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

If your app just stopped working out of the blue, it’s likely the fault isn’t on your end. More often than not, Rivian has experienced outages that lasted hours. I have experienced a few of these, which are automatically resolved overnight. So, before you tinker with your phone or app, try waiting. If it’s an emergency, follow the troubleshooting steps in this article.

After the recent 2.0 update, I couldn’t use the app. This frustrated me to no end. I tried the usual troubleshooting tips like turning my phone on and off, airplane mode, and all the usual stuff. Nothing worked. What eventually worked was me uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Logging in again was a hassle, but that beats calling customer support every time.

This article will explore most users’ common issues while using the Rivian app, the causes, and possible troubleshooting steps.

Common Issues and Solutions

Some of the most common issues that you might experience while using the Rivian app include:

Login Issues

Login issues may be due to various reasons, such as an incorrect password, email address or a problem with the app.

To fix this;

  • Try resetting your password and checking that your login details are correct. If they are and everything else checks out with the app, your next best bet would be to reach out to support.

Connectivity Problems

You may experience issues with the app connecting to your vehicle. This can include difficulties with remote start, locking/unlocking, or locating the vehicle, which may be due to poor or unstable internet connection or because the app is not optimized for the user’s device.

To fix this;

  • Ensure you have a stable Internet connection. You can try turning off and turning on your Wi-Fi connection.

App Crashes

The Rivian app may occasionally crash or freeze on some devices. This is often due to a software bug or a compatibility issue between the app and the device.

To fix this;

  • Simply restart the device.
  • Or uninstalling and reinstalling the app. If the issue persists, users can contact Rivian customer support for assistance.
  • In some cases, insufficient storage space on the device may cause app crashes. It’s a good idea to free up space on your device before using the app to avoid this issue.

Slow Performance

Slow performance is another common issue with the Rivian app. This may be due to a slow Internet connection, an older device, or a software bug.

To fix this;

  • Try connecting to a faster Wi-Fi network.
  • Upgrading to a newer device
  • Check for software updates. Sometimes, a factory reset of the device may be necessary to resolve performance issues.

Feature a Specific Problem

Specific features like climate control, pre-conditioning, scheduling, or the remote lock/unlock feature may not work as expected due to various factors, including connectivity issues.

To fix this;

  • Make sure that the feature is enabled in the app settings.
  • And that your device is properly connected to the Internet.

Troubleshooting Steps

If you’re facing issues with the Rivian app not working correctly, you can follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem:

  • Force-closing the app can sometimes help resolve issues when the Rivian app malfunctions. Here’s how you can force-close the app on different mobile operating systems:

For Android:

  • Go to the “Settings” app.
  • Scroll down and select “Apps”.
  • Find and tap on the “Rivian” app in the list of installed apps.
  • Tap “Force Stop” or “Stop” on the app info screen.

For iOS:

  • On an iPhone with Face ID or an iPad with no Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause slightly. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
  • Swipe left or right to find the Rivian app in the list of open apps.
  • Swipe the app’s preview upwards or off the screen to force-close it.
  • Clearing App Cache and Data: This can help resolve issues related to corrupted data. This is done by going to the settings menu on the device and navigating to the app management section. From there, you can find the Rivian app and tap on the ‘clear cache’ and ‘clear data’ options. This will clear any temporary files or data that may be causing the app to malfunction. Once this is done, you can try relaunching the app and checking if the issue has been resolved.
  • Reinstalling the app: Uninstalling and reinstalling the Rivian app can help you resolve the issue.
  • Update the app:  You should check for possible app updates. Make sure you have the latest version of the Rivian app installed on your device. Outdated versions may have bugs that have been fixed in newer updates.
  • Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure your device has a stable and active internet connection through Wi-Fi or mobile data. A poor connection can disrupt the app’s proper function.
  • Testing on other devices will help determine if the issue is with the device or the app itself. If the app works on a different device, the issue is likely with the first device. In this case, you should try restarting the device. If the app does not work on any device, the issue is most likely with the app itself.

Possible Causes Why Your Rivian App Is Not Working

Software Bug

A software bug can cause the Rivian app to not work in several ways.

Server Outages

Another possible cause of the Rivian app not working is a server outage. This can happen when the servers that host the app are temporarily unavailable due to technical problems or maintenance.

Device Incompatibility

This can happen when the app is not compatible with a device’s operating system or hardware. For example, the app may not work on an older version of an operating system or be optimized for a certain type of device.

User Error

Sometimes, the Rivian app may not be working due to user error. This can include entering incorrect information, such as a wrong email or password, or failing to follow the instructions provided by the app. In these cases, you should review the app’s instructions and ensure you are entering the correct information. If the problem persists, you can restart your device or reinstall the app.

Update and Patch Notes

Rivian communicates to its users about app updates and bug fixes in various means.

  • You’ll receive a notification and details on the update via the Rivian app and your in-vehicle information display. Once delivered through Wi-Fi or cellular (Wi-Fi is preferred), you can perform the update installation conveniently. During the update, your vehicle will be inoperable, must be parked, and has a minimum battery range.
  • You may receive email notifications about app updates and bug fixes if your email is registered. These emails typically provide information about what’s new in the update and why it’s important.
  • Website announcements/Social media: Rivian may post announcements and release notes on its official website or blog detailing app updates, bug fixes, and new features. Rivian may use its official social media channels (e.g., Twitter, Facebook) and newsletters to communicate.
