The reason behind this problem is frequent utilization of DC fast charging and driving with wide-open throttle, leading to overheating of the contactors. When this overheating happens, it affects and distorts electrical surfaces, leading to a lack of contact or potential arcing, which may cause those surfaces to fuse, posing a potential crash risk as they may lose power while in motion and not start. “Stop Safely Now” will appear in the gauge cluster behind the steering wheel, along with a malfunction warning light on the dashboard. Ford’s repair for this recall is a software update to the Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module (SOBDCM) and Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) and an Over-The-Air (OTA) software update, enabling these to perform.
