No, the Mustang Mach-E doesn’t have a heat pump; this is probably due to cost considerations and the design and development timeline. However, efforts are being made to enhance the performance of the Mustang Mach-E to satisfy customers.

I have had the Mustang Mach-E for the past two years, and while it has been a perfect blend of comfort and technology, one major challenge I faced was the absence of a heat pump; unlike other EVs, the Mustang Mach-E relies solely on resistive heating. Without a heat pump, energy is drawn from my car’s voltage battery and used to heat the inside of the cabin, reducing the expected range of the car. Particularly during cold weather, it loses around 30 percent of its range when driven in freezing temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees compared to a 70-degree day.

Now the heat pump works just opposite the refrigerator in your kitchen. The EV’s heat pump usually draws air from the outside. It uses it to raise the battery of your EV or the interior, thereby saving energy as it gathers energy from different hot parts of your car and directs it to the cabin;  implies that your EV won’t have to use its battery to power itself, which means improved range and efficiency. Reversibly, it could also cool the battery by sending excess heat to the outside through the cabin heater.

Also, heat pumps are controlled remotely using your smartphone, allowing you to heat your car before setting off on your journey.

  1. Complexity and Maintenance: Heat pump systems are more intricate than traditional resistive heaters, and their complexity could lead to high maintenance requirements. Any issues or malfunctions may necessitate specialized expertise, potentially leading to higher service and repair costs.

Several popular electric vehicles (EVs) from various manufacturers have incorporated heat pump technology to enhance their heating and cooling systems. Some of the notable EVs with heat pumps include:
