The major difference between Highway Driving Assist (HDA) 1 and HDA 2 is in their lane-keeping capabilities. HDA 1 focuses on maintaining lane position and a safe following distance. HDA 2, on the other hand, offers advanced lane-centering and lane-change features. It can autonomously change lanes when the turn signal is activated, provided the you keep your hands on the wheel. 

The main factor in my decision to purchase HDA 2 was the lane-change assistance feature it offered. With HDA 1, changing lanes meant I had to wait for the system to recognize that I was back within the highway lines and then reactivate it. However, with HDA 2, all I need to do is tap the turn signal, and it will automatically change lanes in that direction as long as I keep my hands on the wheel. This means I no longer have to worry about changing lanes when I’m back within the highway lines.

HDA1 Overview

Hyundai’s first generation Highway Driving Assist System, or HDA1, is an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that helps you stay safe and comfortable on the highway. It uses radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s speed and distance from the vehicle in front and can make adjustments to the vehicle’s speed and position in the lane accordingly. HDA1 also has a lane-keeping assistance feature that can detect when the vehicle starts to drift out of its lane and can gently nudge the steering wheel to bring the vehicle back into the center of the lane. It can also automatically apply the brakes if a collision is imminent.

HDA1 includes the following features:

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability: The system maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, and can bring the vehicle to a full stop if necessary.
  • Lane-centering assistance: The system keeps the vehicle centered in its lane by making small steering adjustments.
  • Hands-on Operation: Requires the you to keep their hands on the steering wheel for operation.
  • Lane Following Control: Assists in keeping the vehicle centered within the lane.
  • Blind spot monitoring: The system uses radar sensors to detect vehicles in the blind spot and warns if there is a vehicle in the blind spot when changing lanes.

The Highway Driving Assist 1 (HDA) system combines two technologies to provide you with a semi-autonomous driving experience on the highway.

  • The Smart Cruise Control (SCC) system uses radar sensors to measure the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you and can adjust your speed to maintain a safe distance. 
  • Lane Following Assist (LFA) uses camera sensors to detect lane markers and keep your vehicle centered in the lane.

Hyundai’s HDA system builds on the capabilities of SCC and LFA and helps make long highway drives easier to manage. 

What Is Hyundai Highway Driving Assist 2 – HDA2?

Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) offers several improvements over the original HDA system. HDA 2 includes a lane-change assistance function that allows the vehicle to change lanes with just the push of a turn signal, as well as machine learning technology that allows the system to learn and adapt to the driver’s driving style. HDA 2 also includes an improved leading vehicle distance control function that allows the vehicle to automatically adjust its speed and distance from the leading vehicle based on traffic conditions.

HDA2 builds on the features of HDA1 and adds the following features and capabilities:
