I was really excited to drive my new Rivian R1T back home. But when I parked in my driveway, I didn’t know how to turn off the car. The excitement turned into confusion, and I sat there, not knowing what to do. After a quick look at the user manual, I figured it out and got back on the road, feeling more appreciative of how easy my R1T is to use.

In this article, I’ll walk you through the steps of turning off your Rivian vehicle. I’ll also address some unique situations you might encounter while trying to turn off your Rivian and some useful tips to consider as an owner of a Rivian vehicle.

How To Turn Off Your Rivian Vehicle?

You can turn off your Rivian Vehicle using any three methods:

  1. Key Fob
  2. Rivian App

Turning Off Your Rivian With Your Key fob

One of the easiest ways to turn off your Rivian is by simply walking away with your key fob. Rivians utilize sensor technology, which detects when the key fob or phone is outside a certain range. This triggers a seamless shutdown process, turning off the vehicle.

You can immediately shut down your Rivian vehicle using the lock button on the key fob. When you press the lock button on your Rivian key fob, it not only locks the doors but also triggers an immediate shutdown of the vehicle’s systems.

Turning Off Your Rivian Using the App

The other way to turn off your Rivian is with your app. You can go into your app and turn off your vehicle. However, this may not work if you’re still in the vehicle.

R1T Won’t Turn Off; Thinks Someone Is Sitting in Passenger Seat

If your Rivian R1T won’t turn off because it thinks someone is sitting in the passenger seat, here’s what you can do:

  • Check for any objects or items on the passenger seat that might trigger the seat occupancy sensor. Remove these objects.
  • Ensure that the passenger seat belt is properly fastened. Sometimes, an unbuckled seat belt can confuse the sensor.
  • Update Software: Sometimes, software updates can address issues like this. Check for any updates for your Rivian R1T and install them as needed.
  • Contact Rivian Support: If the issue persists despite trying the above steps, it’s advisable to contact Rivian Customer Support. They can provide specific troubleshooting guidance and may arrange for a service technician to inspect and resolve the issue.

Turn on or off PAAK (Phone as a Key) from within the App.

Rivians come equipped with the Phone as a Key (PAAK) feature, which allows you to use your smartphone to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle. Here’s how to turn it on/off from within the app:

  2. Ensure your Rivian mobile App is connected to your vehicle.
  3. Access the vehicle control section.
  4. Locate the lock and unlock icon.
  5. Follow the prompts and confirm the shutdown.

Can I turn off my Rivian vehicle while sitting in it?

You cannot manually turn off your Rivian vehicle while you’re still inside it, as the car relies on the presence of the key fob or your mobile phone, which serve as the keys for automatic shut-off, as long as they remain within the car’s operational range.

Rivian trucks are intentionally designed to be walk-away vehicles, meaning they will automatically power down when you exit the vehicle. However, if you need to force it to turn off, there are a few options:

  1. You can open the car door and then close it without leaving the driver’s seat. After a few minutes, the truck will eventually shut down.
  1. Alternatively, you can press the lock button on the key fob or use the Rivian app to trigger the vehicle’s shut-off.
  1. If you wish to conserve power, you can engage kennel mode, which deactivates all interior features while keeping the truck’s power on.

If you plan to sleep in your Rivian, it’s advisable to activate kennel mode to prevent unnecessary battery drain while you rest.

Additional Tips and Considerations

Key Fob & Phone Range: Be aware of the key fob/phone’s range. Ensure that you are a reasonable distance away from the vehicle for the automatic shutdown to work.

Battery Conservation: These turn-off features not only offer convenience but also help conserve your vehicle’s battery, especially in electric vehicles where battery management is crucial.

Regular Software Updates: Stay current with software updates provided by Rivian. These updates may introduce new features or improvements to existing functions, including the shutdown process.

Family and Friends: If you share your Rivian with family or friends, make sure they are familiar with the vehicle’s shutdown procedure to avoid any confusion or unexpected issues.

Key Fob Battery: Ensure that the battery in your key fob is in good condition. A weak key fob battery can affect its communication with the vehicle.
