Does the Rivian Have Home Link Garage Door Opener? Answered

No. But there is an integrated garage door opener. You can remotely open or close your garage door with just one touch on the display by pressing the right thumb control button on the right side of your steering wheel.

For this to work, you first need to set the garage location by:

  • Parking your vehicle near and in front of your garage
  • And go to Settings > Connect > Garages.

I had a Tesla Model Y that connected to my garage door with an installed homelink but it couldn’t be compared to using the Rivian integrated garage door opener. The homelink is great and necessary but after using the Riverside garage door opener, I just prefer the “no fiddling with remote controls” and “long pressing buttons” and “assisted voices” to waiting long seconds for my garage door to open after a signal is sent. Also, the ease of use with the Rivian cannot be compared to using a home link button and navigating through several processes before setting up the garage door opener. The Mach-E garage doon opener has a similar setup to Rivian.

In this article, we will consider the alternatives to the Home Link garage door opener and how to configure the Rivian garage door opener.

Alternatives to Rivian Homelink

While Rivian doesn’t have Homelink, there are other alternatives you can consider:

1. Using a Universal Remote Transmitter

Before you can programme your universal remote, make sure it has new batteries and that the devices you want to control are properly set up. Once you’re ready, the next step is to pair your universal remote with the devices.

Pairing the universal remote control

  1. Turn on your Rivian
  2. Press and release the car button. The universal remote’s On/Off button will light up and should remain lit.
  3. Simultaneously press and hold the car button and the on/off button of the universal remote. The illuminated on/off button will turn off. After a moment, however, it should turn back on.
  4. Release both buttons after the On/Off button relights. It should remain on.
  5. Now, press and release the Play button on your remote. If your car does not turn off after five seconds, continue to hit the Play button every five seconds until the car turns off. The remote is searching through possible codes for your vehicle.
  6. When the vehicle turns off, your remote has found the right code. Next, press and release the reverse button on your remote. Wait to see if the vehicle turns back on, and press it every three seconds until it does.
  7. Press and release the Stop button once more to save the programming for the device in your remote’s memory.

2. Use a Smart Garage Opener with Wifi or Bluetooth.

A smart garage door opener is a type of device that allows you to control your garage door remotely. It uses your wireless internet connection and sensors to transmit information to a mobile app, which you can use to check the door’s status and open or close it from anywhere. There are several different types of smart garage door openers available, each with its own unique set of features and capabilities. Some connect directly to your smartphone via Bluetooth, while others rely on your home’s WiFi network.

To do this,

  • Install the smart garage door controller using the provided adhesive.
  • Connect the two wires to the open and close terminals on your opener.
  • Install the sensor on your garage door.
  • Connect the controller to your home’s WiFi network.
  • When you send a command from your mobile device, it will be sent to your home automation hub.
  • The hub will trigger the sensor in your garage door opener, allowing you to control it remotely.

For the smart garage door opener to work well, it’s important to have a strong WiFi signal in your garage. If the signal is weak, consider moving your router closer to the door or using a WiFi extender to boost the signal. This will ensure that your commands are received and executed quickly and reliably.

3. Using a Voice Assistant Such as Alexa or Google Assistant to Open the Garage Door

Most garage door openers come with a remote that you can use to open and close the door from your car. But you can take it a step further by integrating a smart system like Alexa or Google Assistant with your garage door opener.

This will allow you to control your garage door with your voice. For example, you could say, “Alexa, open the garage door,” and the door would open.

You could also use Alexa to check the status of your garage door or even set up a routine that opens and closes the door at certain times.

How to Add a Garage Door to Rivian

To add other garage door openers, use the “Add a Garage” feature to pair an installed garage door opener with your Rivian. To complete this process,

  • Park near and in front of the garage.
  • In the vehicle center display, choose the garage door icon in the status bar at the top of the screen.
  • In the Garages panel, choose Add a Garage.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to add your garage and program your remote.

My Experience Navigating Garage Doors without Homelink

The thrill of not having a separate remote for the garage door is such a relief. With my smart garage door opener, I could just drive up to my garage door and, instead of reaching for the remote control, simply say, “Alexa, open my garage door.” Within seconds, the door opens, and I’m able to drive in and out without any hassle. There is no need to fiddle with a remote, and I never even have to leave the car! Smart garage door openers make everyday life so much easier.
