Charging my Mach-E was very easy with the Tesla app. I was able to charge quickly and get back on the road in a short amount of time. The supercharger was conveniently located, and the fast charging meant I didn’t have to wait a long time around.

This adapter is released when the Tesla app authorizes you to charge at the station. meaning the adapter is physically connected to the supercharger and cannot be removed until you’ve authenticated your identity using the Tesla app. Once you’ve authenticated, the adapter will unlock, and you can remove it from the supercharger.

Cost of charging M-E at a Tesla supercharger

Tesla superchargers tend to be more expensive than other charging stations. The average price for charging your Mach-E at Tesla superchargers is around $0.25 per key.

However, the exact cost will vary depending on the location and the pricing structure.

How to charge the Mach-E at Tesla superchargers

Charging your Mach-E at a Tesla supercharger is a pretty straightforward process. To do this, you must:

1. Locate a compatible supercharger station.

Find a supercharger station compatible with the Mach-E and locate a vacant charging spot.

2. Park

Park the vehicle in front of the charging station and open the charging port.

It’s important to note that Tesla charging cables are short, so you must close your vehicle to the supercharger and align your left front fender with the available plug side to reach the M-E charging port.

3. Inserting the CCS

Get the app on your phone, click on the booster, and insert the CCS (combined charging system) into the Tesla adapter into the charging port. The adapter unlocks.

4. Connect the supercharger.

You can connect the supercharger cable to the adapter with the adapter unlocked. You’ll need permission from the Tesla app to use the supercharger. This is done to ensure that only authorized users can access the supercharger.

5. The charging process

Your M-E automatically starts charging. You can wait for the charging process before driving your M-E again.

The Solution to The Supercharger Cable Not Reaching the Charging Port on Mach-E

Since the Tesla supercharger cable is not long enough to reach the Mach-E charging port quickly, there are a few potential solutions.

  • First, you can try parking close to the charging cable.
  • Second, you can use a different spot at the supercharger station with longer cables.
  • Using an extension cord for charging your Mach-E vehicle is not recommended. Extension cords are not designed for high-voltage charging and can pose a safety risk. If you must use an extension cord, ensure it’s a heavy-duty cord rated for at least 20 amps.

Will Mach-E use the same chargers as Tesla models?

Yes, Ford has announced that future F-150 Lightning and Mustang M-E 2025 models will use the same charging connector as Tesla models. The protocols for using the Tesla app to charge a non-Tesla vehicle can cause inconvenience. First, you’ll need to download and set up the app before you can start charging.

You’ll need to be within range of the charging station to use the app, so you may need to stay close to your vehicle while charging. Also, the app may not be user-friendly, and there are issues with app functionality and connectivity.

Alternatives to Tesla superchargers

There are several alternatives for Tesla superchargers, including:

  • Level 2 charging is an excellent option for home charging. Level 2 chargers use a 240-volt power supply, allowing faster charging than a standard 120-volt outlet. Most Level 2 chargers can deliver between 3.3 and 19.2 kilowatts of power, so you can fully charge your Mach-E overnight. The main drawback of Level 2 charging is the installation cost, which can be several thousand dollars. However, several rebates and incentive programs can offset this cost.
  • Level 3 charging, also known as DC fast charging, is the fastest way to charge your M-E. These chargers use a 480-volt power supply and can deliver up to 150 kilowatts of power, so you can charge your vehicle in about 30 minutes. The main drawback of Level 3 charging is that it’s not widely available, and the existing stations are often in high demand.
  • Home charging: Another option is to use a home charging station, which allows you to charge your vehicle overnight in the comfort of your own home.
  • Third-party Networks: Most companies that operate public charging stations offer membership programs such as Charge Point, EVgo, Blink, SemaConnect, and Green Lots. These programs allow you to access discounted rates and other benefits, such as priority charging or reservation features.
